Following the election of Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia to form the ad hoc sub-working group on geographical indications (GIs) on 22 March 2022, the first meeting of this sub-group took place online on 16 June 2022.

The aim of the sub-group of the ad hoc working group was to discuss the most suitable legal framework for the protection of GIs in the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) Member States. The sub-group was assisted by two consultants recruited by AfrIPI. One of the consultants will work on the legal assistance: legal gap analysis and review of the existing protocol on GI. Meanwhile, the second consultant will focus on the general needs assessment for managing GIs in the ARIPO region.

 The objectives of this meeting were:

  • to clarify the thematic areas that will guide the work of the sub-group;

  • to present the first draft of the consultant’s work tasked more generally with the needs assessment for the management of GIs in the ARIPO region, according to the thematic areas;

  • To collect general comments from the delegates of the sub-group, especially concerning their input under the abovementioned thematic areas and their expansion in their country and, more broadly, in the ARIPO region;

  • to agree on the rules of procedures of the sub-group and the agenda, and suggest to the ARIPO Secretariat and AfrIPI project the meetings planned in the coming weeks/months: 27 July 2022, 26 September and 27 October 2022.
