Consultative roundtable on IPR enforcement / anti-counterfeiting for North African countries

01 Jan 30 Nov

This activity builds on AfrIPI’s previous work on strengthening Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) enforcement and supporting anti-counterfeiting initiatives in North Africa since 2022.

  • In 2022, AfrIPI organised a virtual consultative roundtable on IPR enforcement for North African countries from 23 to 24 February 2022. The roundtable brought together IPR enforcement officials, judges, experts from ministries of justice, representatives of IP offices, and private sector representatives.

  • From 28 to 30 November 2022, an international seminar was held in Algeria with the support of INPI France under the theme: anti-counterfeiting of IP rights and impacts on the economy and the environment.

  • In 2023, a follow-up consultative roundtable seminar on IPR enforcement took place from 12 to 14 September 2023 in Tunisia, to facilitate discussion on effective techniques and strategies for detecting, monitoring, and investigating IPR infringements.

In September 2024, a three-day workshop for IPR enforcement officials, national administrations, and private sector representatives from all four countries will be organised in Egypt. The participants will take part in plenary lectures, panel discussions, and focus group discussions with the objective of:

  • strengthening IPR enforcement capabilities in the North African region;

  • creating a trans-border institutional cooperation agreement among Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia;

  • creating a roadmap for future anti-counterfeiting work in North Africa.

AfrIPI, INPI France, and other institutional partners will facilitate a cooperation framework among the Intellectual Property Directorates of the participating customs authorities, which will be discussed and adopted by the participants as a proposal for discussion by their governments.
