Support to the screening of GIs in Chad

01 Jan 31 Dec

In 2021, at least six geographical indications (GIs) were registered regionally in the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) region, with other applications pending.

While there is a common understanding about the importance of GIs, some countries have not tracked this evolution. Thus, mapping the existing GIs in some of those countries, like Chad, would help build momentum at the national level.

The objectives of this activity are to:

  • provide Chad with a public policy document showing the existing origin-products that will be suitable for GI protection;

  • provide a GI screening report that suggests a methodology to classify GIs in each country regarding their readiness to follow the GI path;

  • show support that can be provided to identified champions and/or argue for the adoption of public policies targeting GIs at the national level.

  • The results of the screenings will be presented in the framework of a national/regional workshop on GIs.

In 2022, AfrIPI initiated the recruitment of a consultant to conduct the screening study on GIs.

The results of the screenings will be presented in the framework of a national/regional workshop on GIs in 2023.
