Technical support for the development of the legal framework for GIs in ARIPO Member States

01 Jan 31 Dec

This activity is focuses on aiding the creation of a robust legal framework for protecting Geographical Indications (GIs) in ARIPO Member States. It involves AfrIPI’s crucial support in organising and facilitating meetings of the sub Working Group on GIs, both in person and online. These meetings serve as platforms for in-depth discussions on various aspects, such as determining the most suitable legal framework for GIs and understanding the unique needs of Member States concerning GIs. The process involves extensive consultation with Member States, including distributing questionnaires to gather input and feedback.

Ultimately, the overarching objective of this activity is to empower ARIPO Member States with a deeper understanding of GIs and equip them with the necessary tools to implement GI protection measures effectively. The culmination of this effort will be the finalisation and circulation of a model law on GIs, which Member States can use as a basis for their legislative frameworks, thereby fostering harmonisation and consistency in GI protection across the ARIPO region.
