Technical support for the development of the legal framework for GIs in Nigeria

01 Jan 31 Dec

This activity will identify gaps in existing GI legislation and issue recommendations for addressing these gaps, looking at Nigeria’s needs, African and European best practices, and the most protective agreements, such as the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications.

In 2024, it is envisaged that the relevant Nigerian authorities will be encouraged to adopt the draft GI bill and draft by-law on GIs created by the Technical Working Group on GIs after they have submitted their roadmap for adoption of this law.

If the bill and by-law are adopted, GI producers will be able to file applications to protect their GI names. This also applies to foreign GI fields that have expressed interest in being protected on this market (e.g. Cognac and Scotch).
