Second Communications Training

AfrIPI and ARIPO recently held the second Communications Training to strengthen the regional intellectual property rights system. The training targeted IP communicators from ARIPO member states and provided them with valuable communication strategies to promote the ARIPO intellectual property system at various levels. The interactive training sessions were led by experts and focused on developing social media strategies, engaging with the media, and crafting tailored messages for different audiences.

The training had a clear objective: to make IP easier for everyone to understand and to equip IP communicators with the skills they need to spread the word about IP effectively. By improving communication strategies, AfrIPI and ARIPO aim to raise awareness of intellectual property and help the public understand their rights. The highly interactive training sessions allowed participants to share their challenges and receive support in communicating IP matters in their respective countries.

During the training sessions, participants had the opportunity to learn from communications specialists and experts, including Ms. Nadine Drummond, a content creator, ghostwriter, and social media consultant at the World Intellectual Property Organization and Mr. Awel Uwihanganye, Head of Advancement Office and Advisor to the Vice Chancellor at Makerere University. Ms. Drummond shared insights on developing a social media strategy and building a solid online presence. Mr. Uwihanganye discussed strategic engagement with the media in the ARIPO region, emphasising narrative shaping and storytelling through appropriate channels.

Overall, the second Communications Training was an important step towards empowering national IP communicators in the ARIPO region to effectively communicate the importance of intellectual property and its benefits to society.
