International seminar on anti-counterfeiting and intellectual property and their impact on the economy and the environment
Algiers, Algeria
AfrIPI co-hosted its first on-site event in Algeria on 28 - 29 November 2022, to support North African countries in the fight against counterfeiting, to promote intellectual property rights (IPRs) and to discuss their impact on the economy and the environment. The event was organised in collaboration with Cabinet MAP, Institut de la propriété industrielle (INPI) de France, the Algerian-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI algéro-française) and Union des fabricants (UNIFAB, France). It was intended for police and customs officials, decision-makers, regulators, owners of intellectual property rights, and lawyers involved in IPR enforcement in North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia).
This seminar, a component of the IP Action Plan strategy designed for the Mediterranean Union to strengthen cooperation and exchanges between all the administrations in the region had for objective to:
-
raise awareness of the importance of IP, the fight against counterfeiting and the impact they have on the national economy, as well as on the environment;
-
raise awareness among rights holders of the importance of their role in the fight against counterfeiting, particularly when it comes to filing customs alerts;
-
propose solutions that can be adapted at a local level while taking into account national constraints;
-
raise awareness of the promotion of national crafts through IP, certification, labelling, trade mark registration and IP rights defence strategies.
The seminar was one of the outcomes of the Consultative round table on IP rights enforcement for countries in North Africa that was held on 23-24 February 2022. This online event brought together stakeholders involved in IP rights enforcement, IP offices, research, and industry and trade from Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.
