On 6 October 2022, AfrIPI and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) hosted a virtual training session on experience-sharing on the system of voluntary registration of copyright and related rights in other jurisdictions. This activity aims to support ARIPO and its Member States to boost their creative sectors, improve livelihoods and contribute significantly to Africa’s long term sustainable development.

The activity was held in the context of the Kampala Protocol on Voluntary Registration of Copyright and Related Rights. This Protocol was adopted by the Member States at the Kampala Diplomatic Conference in Uganda on 28 August 2021.

The Intellectual Property (IP) Offices that have implemented voluntary registration of copyright and related rights in their countries shared their own experiences to help ARIPO be prepared to start its system when its legal framework is in place.

When the Protocol implementation takes place, it will bring into operation a regional system for voluntary registration of copyright and related rights in ARIPO Member States. This system will provide copyright holders means of presumption of ownership of rights, which has been lacking under the present system of non-registration of rights.

Representatives from the following organisations took part in the virtual meeting:

  • AfrIPI

  • ARIPO

  • Copyright Society of Malawi

  • Hungarian IP Office

  • Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO)

  • Ghana Copyright Office

  • Spanish IP Office

  • United States Patents & Trademark Office (USPTO)
