ARIPO study visit to Alicante

Promoting international agreements on intellectual property rights and supporting ARIPO’s mission to foster creativity and innovation for economic growth in Africa are key objectives of the AfrIPI project. From 12 to 14 December 2023, the heads of national IP offices from ARIPO member states are embarking on an important study visit to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in Alicante, Spain.

This visit is of great importance in strengthening cooperation between ARIPO and the EUIPO and provides a valuable opportunity for ARIPO member states to gain insights and best practices from the EUIPO, which is renowned for its innovative approach to and expertise in the field of intellectual property. The study visit is an important step towards strengthening African intellectual property systems and promoting an enabling environment for economic development and innovation.

The EUIPO, as the regional office responsible for administering IP rights for 27 European Union countries, has successfully promoted business development, innovation and creativity in Europe. By familiarising the heads of ARIPO IP offices with the EUIPO’s tools and practices, the study visit aims to enable them to improve their IP systems and facilitate economic growth and development in their respective countries.

One of the main focuses of the visit is to familiarise the NIPOs of ARIPO member states with the latest IP developments in the European Union. This includes providing an insight into the work of the EUIPO, particularly in the area of trade marks and designs. By gaining first-hand knowledge of the EUIPO’s operations, ARIPO member states can learn about the strategies and tools that have made the EU IP system successful, allowing them to implement similar approaches within their IP offices.

During the study visit, the heads of the ARIPO IP offices will have the opportunity to learn about the business benefits of integrating EUIPO IP tools and practices in their offices through practical presentations. The EUIPO is open to sharing its flagship tools with its partners around the world, including African IP offices. The Ugandan IP Office (URSB) is one of the success stories, as the use of EUIPO tools led to the Utilities and Government Services Digital Excellence Award, which was presented at the 2023 Digital Impact Awards Africa in November this year. The EUIPO is proud to have contributed to this success by sharing the EUIPO tools. Zambia is another case where the integration of EUIPO tools is underway, with the Front Office set to go live soon.

The study visit highlights the importance of geographical indications (GIs), which are used to identify products that originate from a specific geographical location and possess qualities or a reputation attributable to that origin. A visit to a GI field, Turron de Alicante, will provide an insight into how European GI producers have turned the preservation of geographical origin into a significant economic activity. AfrIPI actively supports the development of a legal framework for GIs in ARIPO member states and promotes key pilot GI products with high potential.

By fostering cooperation between ARIPO member states and the EU, the study visit aims to create an evidence-based and solution-oriented model of cooperation. It provides a platform for the exchange of experiences, knowledge and tools between the two regions, ultimately supporting the uniformity, transparency and sustainability of the intellectual property system in Africa.

Through projects like AfrIPI, the EUIPO is committed to supporting its African partners in their efforts to strengthen their intellectual property systems. By sharing its expertise and collaborating with IP offices in Africa, the EUIPO aims to contribute to the development of a robust IP ecosystem that drives economic growth, innovation and creativity on the continent.

Overall, the study visit reinforces the importance of international cooperation in the field of intellectual property rights and highlights the role of ARIPO and AfrIPI in promoting innovation and economic development in Africa. By drawing on the EUIPO’s expertise and experience, ARIPO member states can improve their IP systems, support business development and innovation, and create an environment conducive to creativity and entrepreneurship.
