The African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) ad hoc working group on geographical indications (GIs) was held online on 22 March 2022 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
This meeting was the first in its series. It aimed to reset the scene and create a subgroup of the ad hoc working group on GIs specifically tasked with achieving the expected results and presenting them at the next Administrative Council.
The online meeting started with opening remarks from the Director General of ARIPO, Bemanya Twebaze, and the AfrIPI Team Leader, Dennis Scheirs. Next, Monique Bagal, AfrIPI GI long-term expert, provided background information and suggestions. Finally, Denis Sautier and Coline Leseigne from the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) discussed the Africa-GI e-learning courses available for interested delegates.
The ARIPO Member States participated in this meeting and were grouped according to their legal regime on GIs. Each group had to select a member or members who would participate in working sessions of a subgroup of the ad hoc working group on GIs. The Member States nominated were Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.
