AfrIPI reaffirms support for African Union’s Continental Strategy on Geographical Indications
The Intellectual Property and Innovation in Africa project (AfrIPI) proudly announces its ongoing support for the African Union's (AU) Continental Strategy for geographical indications (GIs). This strategy provides a comprehensive roadmap for African Union Commission members and critical stakeholders to help develop, promote, and protect GIs throughout Africa. This initiative raises awareness on Africa's unique products and empowers its producers.
On 5 June 2024, the Technical Working Group of the African Geographical Indications (GIs) Consultative Committee held a significant meeting. The committee reviewed the progress of the current Continental Strategy (2018-2023) and initiated an evaluation study. These actions come at a crucial time, paving the way for Africa's participation in the upcoming ‘Africa GI session’ at the FAO-CIRAD Worldwide Conference on GIs in Rome in July 2024.
AfrIPI remains a steadfast partner to the AU and all stakeholders involved in this initiative. This announcement serves as a significant boost for African producers. Intellectual property rights like GIs, enable them to protect and promote their unique products. By associating a product's quality and origin to a specific geographical location, GIs unlock new market opportunities and empower African producers to make their mark on the global stage.
